Dining Tips for People with Diabetes

Posted on April 10th, 2013 by

Dining Tips for People with DiabetesEveryone wants to be healthy but still be able to enjoy occasions such as holidays and birthdays however, people with diabetes had to have a special diet. Trying to concentrate on food during special occasions and trying to stay healthy at the same time can be hard and frustrating, especially for families and people with diabetes. Meals during special occasions should not interrupt your diabetes control. Eating healthy but allowing a little indulgence is fine for everyone, even for people with diabetes. The trick is pre-planning. Here are the three healthy ideas to keep in mind in planning for the meals.

Schedules

First, identify your schedule. Will you traveling? Are you dining in with your friends, or on a group date? These simple questions will help you know how to go with the type and amount of food your will be eating and gauge the activities you would probably be doing. This would also give you more reasons to enjoy the occasion not only though food, but also through fun activities with family, friends and your special someone.

Menu

Dining Tips for People with DiabetesDive in to that special savory dish or sweet dessert you crave. You just need to do a little tweaking to that recipe, adjust or substitute some ingredients with those that will provide the same flavor, yet few calories or carbohydrates, and keep your sugar levels and your overall health intact. Compare foods that would give you more healthy options than regular foods with heavy calories. You can substitute 2 egg whites for each whole egg to be used in baked recipes. Replace heavy cream with evaporated skim milk in cheesecakes and cream pies.

Portion Size

Watching your portions gives you the best of both worlds. It prevents you from gaining those extra pounds and allows you to taste a little of every dish served on the dining table. Instead of trying to lose pounds on special occasion, try to at least maintain your current weight. It will give you less disappointment and less stress. You can also take your focus off the food instead and on your family and friends. It will give you an opportunity to slow down and bond with your loved ones instead of overindulging in the foods.

How to be a Better Investor

Posted on April 5th, 2013 by

How to be a Better Investor	Remember the day how you felt when the Dow Jones industrial average plunged more than 500 points over fears that a French bank might sink because of its holdings in U.S subprime mortgages? We are living trying times, and investors should be more concerned about feeble economy and volatile, often irrational markets. But now more than ever, we need to set aside emotions and approach our investments with logic and detachment, and take a long term view. This is true especially because it’s human nature to base many of our decisions on how we feel about what just happened. We tend to extrapolate what’s happened lately into the future, especially when we’re anxious. And loss of wealth is so painful to our psyches that we often sell just to make the pain go away, even if the appropriate strategy is to hang on to our investment.

Here is a four step plan to help investors through what are bound to be turbulent times ahead.

  • Don’t over monitor. According to recent studies, the more we examine our portfolios, the riskier we think they’ve become.
  • Always sleep on an important decision. Don’t make moves based on the heat of the moment.
  • Seek a second opinion. It doesn’t matter whether the provider of that view is a financial adviser, a friend or a spouse. Second opinions provide perspective, and the most valuable ones challenge your preconceived notions.

How to be a Better Investor

When the market drops, view it as assets going on sale. That doesn’t mean you start chucking money at stocks wholesale, but you should consider buying prudently during declines. In addition to the heat-of-the-moment reactions, we need to guard against other common mental hurdles that experts say interfere with our ability to make the most of our investments.

Building your Own Salvage Yard

Posted on February 18th, 2013 by

Basically, when we talk about a salvage yard, we are talking about a place where non-functional vehicles are stored, disassembled, and chopped up for usable parts.  Sometimes, these places are called junk yards or wrecker yards, which often double as distribution centers for car parts.  This can be quite a lucrative business if you have everything necessary in place.

Salvage Yard

It is important to understand that before you begin the actual construction, you must secure the necessary permits from the government.  This type of business, like many others are regulated, which means that a business license is necessary to build and eventually operate it.  This is the first step in building your own salvage yard, and not buying property, stocking up on inventory, or advertising your business.

The next step is to choose the appropriate site for the salvage yard.  The location of the property can be a good determinant to the amount of success that your business venture can reach.  Make sure that you are aware of zoning laws in your jurisdiction to ensure that your operation will remain hassle-free so that your profits will not be affected.  Also take the necessary precautions to protect your property from the moment you buy it and not only at the start of construction.

Delegate a construction worker who will be in charge of the fencing and installation of other security features like onsite cameras for example.  Ensure that the installation of the security features will not in any way hamper the operation of the salvage yard and will allow for gates to remain accessible during delivery of vehicle inventories.

Salvage Yard

Make sure that you choose the appropriate materials not only for your fencing, but also for your office.  Although the salvage yard may be made up of predominantly soil material for the vehicle inventories, the office area should remain presentable.  This means using good quality floor tiles combined with beautifully designed interior walls and panels.  This can help boost transactions with potential clients.

There will come a time when you will have vast inventory in your hands.  Be sure that you are prepared for this by having the necessary tracking system in place.  With today’s technology, there are a number of affordable, but highly efficient tracking systems that can be used that combine advanced gadgets with functional software applications.  As much as possible, bundle your tracking system with your accounting programs to make your business run smoothly.

As you can see, building your own salvage yard requires more than just having access to quality inventory or advertising of your business.  Just like any other business venture, you have to plan and prepare it for success.

Paper Shredder ReviewsEven though your personal information or business information don’t exactly qualify as ‘classified’ information, and sifting through trash with a furry friend may be comical, it is actually legal for someone to take anything from trash bins since they are consider public domain. For the security of your sensitive information, you may want to consider buying your own paper shredder, whether for home or office use. But first, you should determine the paper shredder type that will fit your requirements—personal or commercial type shredders.

Personal Paper Shredder

This type of paper shredder is capable of accommodating 2-8 paper sheets in a single pass. It is specifically developed for occasional use by only 1-2 persons at most. According to paper shredder reviews, users should strictly follow the instructions that come with the unit to lower the risk of potential breakdown. Likewise, always follow the suggested paper capacity and avoid using the machine for more than 10-15 minutes.

Commercial Type Paper Shredder

A commercial type paper shredder is developed for accommodating more documents for shredding than a personal paper shredder. It also comes with more powerful motors for allowing them to shred for longer times. Industrial and heavy duty paper shredders are usually placed in warehouses and can accommodate heavy volumes of paper, while shredders typically found in general business and office environments are placed in mailrooms or hallways.

Paper Shredder ReviewsThese shredder types are easily maintainable and only require oiling to minimize friction, replacing the bags, as well as cleaning paper dust from the blades. Normally, commercial type shredders can last 7 to 10 years if regularly maintained and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The paper scraps shredded by the machine may be placed in different kinds of containers. The low end types typically drape over a trash can’s edges, while other shredders provide users with a handy stand for holding plastic bags or their own tailor fitted trash cans. On the other hand, high end shredder machines usually come equipped with attached wheeled cabinets so users can easily roll them around.

Note that the most common paper jam causes include overflowing bags or bins of scrap paper. When looking to purchase a paper shredder, a nice feature to have would be an indicator feature that lets users know when the bin is full, especially on units with cabinets so users won’t have to check the bin often. For shredders who use plastic bags, manufacturers usually sell them as accessories, or you can easily buy normal plastic bags with the same size.

Common Hand Tools: Types and Tips for General Use

Posted on January 31st, 2013 by

When dealing with common hand tools you normally have in your tool storage kit, you should always use the most suitable one for a specific task to prevent damage to yourself, the thing you’re working on, and the tool itself. Below is a short guide on how to use common hand tools safely, along with some general descriptions.

  • Common Hand ToolsWrenches are utilized for loosening or tightening bolts and nuts. The most widely used wrenches include the socket, open-end, and box wrenches. Every one of these is used for different purposes based on a work area’s tightness or the required leverage. A less popular type of wrench is the crescent or adjustable wrench. This is not recommended to be used for general tasks since it easily slips off of tighter nuts and bolts.
  • Socket wrenches are extremely popular because of its user-friendly design and flexibility. These either have 6 or 12 internal teeth or grooves—those that come with 6 are considered stronger. All socket wrenches require attachments for turning.
  • When using a screwdriver with a flat blade, ensure that the screw slot fits the tip properly to make certain that the screwdriver won’t slip get removed from the slot once you put pressure on it. The wrong screwdriver can damage the screw head or slip from your hand.
  • The Phillips screwdriver perfectly fits a screw with the star shaped slot. Because it fits perfectly, it may be twisted and pushed more steadily. However, you will still need the right size for a perfect fit.
  • Common Hand ToolsAll tool storage kits must contain at least one type of hammer. When using hammers, remember that you should pick one according to the material or task you’ll be using it for. In general, the face of the hammer should always be softer than what you are hammering to avoid damage. Although the ball-peen hammer is most widely used, you should always use a larger hammer if you can’t find a specific type that suits your task.
  • Plastic hammers can suffice for some hammering tasks since steel hammers can damage or mark a material softer than it such as aluminum. Hammer heads made of softer materials won’t damage metal components and can cushion the force of each hammer strike. Some hammer heads can be made up of copper, brass, or even hard rubber.
  • Pliers are utilized for cutting and grasping, with the most commonly used type being combination pliers. Some tasks may require channel lock pliers for its snugger fit on parts considered too large for typical combination pliers and its wider grip. On the other hand, long-nosed pliers are utilized for hard to reach areas, snap ring pliers for detaching snap rings, and diagonal cutting pliers for cutting cotter pins or wires.

Photography Shooting Tips

Posted on December 5th, 2012 by

There are literally a lot of tricks on what you can do with your camera and your photo but at most we’ll start with the basics. Knowing your camera and reading the manual is one step in making good photography. New digital cameras nowadays have become more features than we could ever use. Here are some shooting tips to capture good shots.

photography tips

  • When shooting against a very bright background or against the sun, use fill-in flash so that the subject will be exposed properly, unless you are taking a silhouette shot. Avoid taking pictures of people in the sun in their face since they tend to squint or have funny facial expression because of the blinding brightness.

  • If you don’t have time to set the camera, use P-mode and Auto ISO. The Auto ISO level can be pre-set in the order you desire.

  • Always keep filters ready, like Neutral Density (ND) if you’re going to shoot in the daylight. ND filters help to cut the light going in your camera, like when you want to shoot flowing water showing motion in broad daylight. Also keep UV (ultra violet) filters handy. They help protect your lens specially the front elements from scratches.

  • Remember to always keep your batteries charged.

  • Buy the fastest and biggest memory cards you can afford especially now that modern digital cameras have the ability to  record 1080p mode. Slower cards buffering can be a problem. Buy multiple memory cards for back up use as well.

  • Make sure to check the settings of your camera when shooting in different modes and when changing locations.

  • Never point your camera directly to the sun especially when you are looking through the viewfinder. There have been cases when some laser lights damage the CCD/CMOS of the camera.

  • Make sure your own quickie stabilizer like a tension string or a bean bag.

  • Invest ins a good dry box to keep your equipment in. There are places where humidity is high, and the possibility of mold or fungus growth is more likely.

  • Lastly, always bring your camera. You’ll never know when that once in a lifetime shot will come your way.
